Hitler seldom spoke to so little purpose, and it is possible that his mind was not on the subject. Six days later, in another speech at Nuremberg, he went as close to declaring war against Czechoslovakia as it is possible to go without actually signing the order to his troops to advance into enemy territory. He cried out that the Czechoslovak Government was using all the means in its power to annihilate 3.5 million Sudeten Germans. They were being deprived of their rights, they were not permitted to sing German songs or to wear white stockings. Indeed, they were brutally struck down if they wore white stockings. The tone was ferociously threatening, but he gave no examples of atrocities, perhaps because there were none. "The misery of the Sudeten Germans is without end," he declared, and he was certain that German patience was exhausted. He promised that Germany would take care of her own and put an end to the continued oppression of 3.5 million Germans. "I hope," he added ominously, "that the foreign statesmen will be convinced that these are not mere words."
The violence of Hitler's tone and the vehemence of his attack on Czechoslovakia surprised Chamberlain out of his lethargy. Feeling that quick action was necessary, he sent off a seven-line telegram to Hitler:
Having regard to the increasingly critical situation, I propose to visit you immediately in order to make an attempt to find a peaceful solution. I could come to you by air and am ready to leave tomorrow. Please inform me of the earliest time you can receive me, and tell me the place of meeting. I should be grateful for a very early reply. Neville Chamberlain.
